Helen Dawson Avery died peacefully at Huntsville Hospital on Sunday, July 28, 2019 following a debilitating stroke. She was born in Chilton County, Alabama to Evans and Ida (McCary) Dawson on April 9, 1935. Helen was a faithful wife and homemaker, serving her family and raising three children with her husband, John, in Huntsville, Alabama. Helen and John moved to Giles County, Tennessee in 1980 where they enjoyed retirement and rural community life. They are members of Solid Rock Baptist Church. Helen is survived by her husband, John Delbert Avery; daughters Pamela Avery and Patricia Avery Brown (John); sisters Jean Carden and Joyce Hilyer (Charles); 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Earlene Hayes; brother, Willard Dawson; son, John D. Avery, Jr.; and great-grandson, Micah Brown. Visitation will be Saturday, August 3, from 11 am to 2 pm at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 138 Griffin Road, in Prospect, Tennessee (38477) with service following, Rev. Anthony Bledsoe officiating. A private family burial will follow at Giles Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be grandsons, John Brown III, David Brown, Ben Brown, Chance Jones, Jonathan Dumas, and Jonathon Bradley.
